chocolate chip cookie cake

by Amy on 5 June 2012

do you ever get a hankerin’ for freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies but don’t feel like making the dough, rolling it into individual cookies, etc.? if so, fear not, because i have the perfect recipe for you! this chocolate chip cookie cake is essentially one giant chocolate chip cookie that you can cut into slices. it’s much quicker to make than individual cookies, + just as delicious. if anything, it might be more delicious, as it keeps a slightly softer, more ooey-gooey texture than individual cookies.

oh, + an added bonus? the blog that i got the recipe from, chocolate + carrots, adapted the original recipe to work in some whole wheat flour for added healthiness. while i’m certainly not going to call this diet food, the whole wheat flour definitely adds a healthy note. i happily treated myself to a small slice after dinner for a bunch of nights in the row, guiltlessly getting my chocolate/sweets fix. a decadent-tasting, chocolatey dessert that you can still feel good about eating? win!

chocolate chip cookie cake

serves about 8, adapted from chocolate + carrots

1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

preheat the oven 350°F.

beat the butter + sugar together. next, beat in the egg + vanilla.

in a separate bowl, mix the flours, baking soda, cream of tartar, + salt. add dry ingredients to the batter + mix until well-combined. stir in the chocolate chips.

spread dough into a 9-inch round tart pan + has been coated with canola oil spray. bake for 20 minutes, or until light golden brown.

Thanks a lot … now I’m craving chocolate chip cookies, and it’s not even 8 am! 😉

2 Chung-Ah | Damn Delicious June 5, 2012 at 7:05 am

I’m game for an cookie in the form of a “cake.” And since it has wheat flour, I’ll be eating twice as much as usual, since it’s healthy and all :)

3 Kathryn June 5, 2012 at 7:19 am

Oh this has been on my list to make since Caroline posted and this has only encouraged me that I need to get into the kitchen asap.

4 amy June 5, 2012 at 7:25 am

it’s really delicious, kathryn, + i love the addition of the whole wheat flour. i think you’re going to love it!

I made a very sweet dessert yesterday but tried hard to convince myself that the added flax seed and greek yogurt made it somewhat healthy. This cookie cake looks great!

Oh gosh, this is too good to be true. A chocolate chip cookie cake…it’s like you’re reading my mind! I’m definitely making this!

11 katie June 5, 2012 at 10:15 am

I am the worlds biggest fan of the cookie cake. I use the tollhouse recipe, but I definitely need to give this healthier version a try. Oh and I love the fact that you have used a tart pan–that’s genius! I make a HUGE cake using my pizza pan!

12 Erin @ Texanerin Baking June 5, 2012 at 10:22 am

Oh… pretty! I tried making this but I messed mine up (because of oven issues) and so I “have” to make it again. 😀

13 sarah k @ the pajama chef June 5, 2012 at 10:39 am

yum! my mom used to make a chocolate chip cookie cake. haven’t thought about it in years!

14 Katie B. of June 5, 2012 at 10:44 am

Wow, what a great looking recipe!

Did you know you can lower the calorie count even further by replacing 1/2 of the butter with an equal amount of unsweetened applesauce? It won’t affect the taste or texture, but it sure helps cut the fat!

15 amy June 5, 2012 at 10:52 am

i didn’t know that, katie, but it’s an awesome tip. thank you SO much for sharing – i’ll definitely be trying that in the future!

17 Kelly June 5, 2012 at 11:52 am

yes! i’ve had that pining for choco chip cookie but not wanting to make the dough! this is like the best of both worlds – choco chip cookie AND cake! is it bad that i’m licking my lips and drooling right now? i can almost “taste” the choco chip cake now…

19 Megan @ Culinary Chops June 5, 2012 at 12:54 pm

wow! I saw your facebook post, and was dying to see the real deal!

I love cookies…in fact, I’m determined to incorporate a chocolate chip cookie in my wedding cake (which is obviously only a wish at this point)!

Great post Amy!

20 amy June 5, 2012 at 12:56 pm

love the idea of incorporating a chocolate chip cookie into a wedding cake – how fabulous would that be?!

21 Shannon June 5, 2012 at 1:22 pm

This looks awesome! I love chocolate chip cookies and I’ve been thinking about making one of these for a while. I definitely need one with a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream on top :)

22 amy June 5, 2012 at 1:35 pm

it would be sooooo good with vanilla ice cream on top!

23 Ashley @ Kitchen Meets Girl June 5, 2012 at 1:37 pm

I love this!! I have to admit, I don’t make cookies all that often because I’m not a fan of the rolling out, etc.–but this?? This I can do! LOVE that it uses whole-wheat flour, too!

24 LeAndra June 5, 2012 at 1:39 pm

I love the use of the tart pan! My automatic thought would have been to bake this recipe as a bar cookie in a square or rectangular pan, but the tart pan makes it so fancy.

25 Blond Duck June 5, 2012 at 1:42 pm

Cookie in pie form!

26 Rachel @ Baked by Rachel June 5, 2012 at 2:02 pm

I’ve never had chocolate chip cookie cake, but I how a sneaking suspicion that it is very delicious! Looks so good!

38 Renee June 6, 2012 at 7:23 am

I have always liked chocolate chip cookie cake. I have tried just baking regular cookie dough in a pan and it usually does not come out the way I want. Thanks for sharing this recipe because it looks just right.

I love recipes for cookie “cakes”. While I enjoy making cookies, I definitely get lazy sometimes and don’t feel like rolling out the dough once it’s all mixed up! This looks delicious!
